Which classic movie don’t you like/can’t enjoy and why?

Not sure if it is considered a ‘classic’ or not but I HATE the movie ‘Election’. I like dark humor and by all reasons I should like this movie, but I can’t stand it. I don’t think it is funny at all and can’t understand the praise for it. But I love Sideways and About Schmidt so go figure. Also throw ‘Juno’ in there too. Pretentious garbage.

And I’m sure I’ll get flack for this, but I also don’t like ‘Dazed and Confused’ at all.

Which ten classic movies haven’t you seen yet?

I hate this question because I feel like I’m judging my own cinemaphile status

Have you ever sneaked into another movie at the cinema?

Used to do it all the time. If the movie I was watching was boring, I’d go check times for other films and go to them. Back in those days you never got carded for R rated films and you could smoke in the lobby.

Which actor/actress do you think is overrated?

Actor: Edward Norton. Although I think he was really great in American History X and Fight Club, I find his acting very wooden and stilted.

Actress: Sandra Bullock/Kathryn Hiegle- I just don’t like either of them. Mostly Kathryn because she just is a terrible actress and looks like she is a total bitch all the time.

From which big director have you never seen any movie (and why)?

Pedro Almodovar. I don’t know why I haven’t but I know a lot of my friends hate his stuff, so I’m staying away for now.

Which movie do you love, but is generally hated?

Hannibal. Everyone seems to really hate this movie. But I love it. I think it is this grand guidnol type of film that is over the top in each way. It is like Beauty and the Beast but with a guy being fed pieces of his own brain, and I love it.

Have you ever been “one of those annoying people” at the cinema?

I’m a very laid back person who just kind of goes with the flow; except when it comes to movies. I hate people who check their phones or carry on loud conversations. I’m there to watch a movie.

Did you ever watch a movie, which you knew in advance would be bad, just because of a specific actor/actress was in it? Which one and why?

Lady in the Water. I really like Paul Giamatti but I knew that movie would be complete and utter shit

Did you ever not watch a specific movie because it had subtitles? 

Probably if it was around 2am and I was too tired to pay attention enough

Are there any movies in your collection that you have had for more than five years and never watched?

No, I rarely buy movies anymore and if I’m going to spend the money on it, I’m going to watch it.

Which are the worst movies in your collection and why do you still own them?

Probably ‘Troll’. Though not as bad as Troll 2, it is by no means a good movie. I got it on VHS for Christmas as a young kid because the cover looked awesome and I watched it probably 20 times or more. Not giving it up ever.

Do you have any confessions about your movie watching setup at home?

Pretty simple for me: cut the lights off, grab some snacks, relax on the couch, and enjoy!

Any other confessions you want to make?

The first R-Rated film I saw in the theater was Terminator 2.

    ’10 Classics…’ Wow. That’s the hardest question on there, I reckon. What constitutes a ‘classic’ nowadays? Or, who decides what’s a ‘classic’ or not?

    Nice to see love for ‘Hannibal’.

    • Thanks Wolf! Yeah, i had trouble picking the 10. Had to get some help from Wikipedia and AMC websites.

        Scott understands what it is, the Grand Guignol. When folk discuss ‘Silence Of The Lambs’ they usually mention the break out scene, with the guard strung up on the cage. Lector’s a showman with a dark humour, he’s theatrical. And no one questioned how he did it.

        Scott took that scene and ran. We were told about it in ‘Silence’, even saw it briefly (in the above scene)… but generally Lector was a legend, told in hushed tones. Are they exaggerating just a little? No, they aren’t. In ‘Hannibal’ I saw what I imagined was lurking beneath Hopkins’s calm facade.

      • I love almost everything about the movie, the sets, the locations, the gore, the dark humor. Everything about that movie is intentional. they knew what they were making and I think it’s fantastic

      • On the score, I love the ‘wrong’ version of the ‘Blue Danube’ – out of tune, wrong time signature, all over the place it is. Not sure if it’s Zimmer or Badelt responsible for that cue but it’s ace.

      • I love too that they created an entire opera just for the film. Honestly I can’t understand people seeing Gary Oldman and not understanding what Scott was doing with the film

      • yeah, learned that listening to the commentary. They wrote and did all costumes and all just for the film

      • Y’know, I did know that. I’m not thinking right. I’m trying to watch ‘Edge Of Darkness’ for my B/Day series and I haven’t got a clue what’s going on…

      • i didn’t even know it was a series. I still have yet to see the new batman movie. Maybe this weekend

      • I’m pencilled in for ‘Bats’ on Saturday – got to go for the tickets tomorrow, see what they’ve got left for the IMAX.

      • I barely get out to the theater (unless it is a kids movie) anymore. Last one I saw was Prometheus and before that it was one of Twilight movies

        Don’t tell me, you just had to see what all the fuss was about. Or you just lurv the idea of sparkly vampires…

        … this film is getting cretinous now. Absolute nonsense. I’m quite nonplussed.

      • The wife likes them, and I get lots of unintentional laughs out of it

  2. Terminator 2 was the first R-Rated film I ever saw too! I begged my parents (I was 10, I think) and they went to see it first to make sure it was OK for my impressionable eyes.
    The 10 films thing was tough because you do have to make your own judgment on what is “classic”, I tried using the IMDB top 250 but that wasn’t working so hot. You should really see The Apartment out of the ones you listed, though…not for “art house film guy” status or anything, just because it’s a great movie.

    • I was 10 at the time too haha! My parents let me watch pretty much anything I wanted (except the exorcist for some reason) and it was so exciting to go see it at the theater.

      • Maybe they didn’t want you to ask any questions about “your mother sucks cocks in hell” or the masturbating with the crucifix part. Although my mom and I were just talking about how movies were just different back when you and I were growing up. My nephew just turned 9 and he is strictly forbidden from even PG-13 movies. I recently rewatched Ghostbusters and they swear a shocking amount in that movie and it’s only rated PG. Just weird stuff.

      • my mom actually got me into a lot of films. Every summer when I was off we would rent a ton of classics and watch them. I ended up seeing the Exocist at 12 at a friends house

      • I’d be about 19 when I saw ‘The Exorcist’ – proper under-the-counter manoueuvre at the VHS rental shop, hard to get hold of a copy otherwise back then…

      • We lived close to a few ‘mom and pop’ video stores. Places that you could rent the ‘Faces of Death’ movies and soft-core stuff in the back room. Ah the 80’s

    First ‘X’-cert… dun-dun-dun… ‘Alien’. I was… (counts on fingers)… 14-ish.

  4. Great list! I’d have trouble thinking of classics too, but to be fair in school I had to watch tons of classics because I took cinema history 1 and 2 at two different colleges just because I liked studying cinema history.
    I liked Hannibal too but I found it strange, not the brains eating but I don’t know, I can’t really put a finger on it. Maybe it was Clarice.

    • I know you probably won’t Droid, but perhaps give it a second go around. This time without the baggage of Silence hanging over at it. Try to see it in the way Wolf and I were discussing. I’d like to know your opinion on a second view

  8. Sorry to take so long to finally read your confessions, but with almost 40 people joining this blogathon it has been quite a task as I don’t like to skim through them. Thanks for participating.

    Have not seen Election and the IMDB score actually makes me want to at least check it out. I’m opposite to you because I really didn’t like Sideways, so I might enjoy it 😉 Have not seen Dazed and Confused either.

    Out of the movies you haven’t seen there are 4 I haven’t seen. Seeing as Gone With the Wind is mentioned as a movie a lot of people actually don’t like in other confessions I’d wait with checking it out. I really liked The Apartment, so give that a chance.

    I like Norton, but completely respect your thoughts about him.

    Saw my first Almodovar movie last year, The Skin I Live In, which was one of my favorites (it ended up in my top ten of 2011). It’s very twisted, but such a stunning movie.

    Have not seen Hannibal as I generally don’t watch horror movies.

    • Nostra, thanks for the reply! I’m sure you have had a lot to go through! If you do see Election let me know your thoughts! I’ve heard great things about ‘Skin’ but he has so many I’m not sure where to start.
